Nowhere on earth packs as many perfect, consistent waves into as small a space as the Mentawai Islands. Warm water, shallow reef and a wide-open window to Southern Ocean swell mean dozens of world-class breaks sit within a short boat ride of one another.
Why the Mentawais are so good
The archipelago faces directly into the path of the groundswells that spin out of the Roaring Forties. Those swells arrive with long intervals and real power, wrapping onto reef passes that groom them into some of the most photogenic waves in surfing. Because the islands run north to south for well over 100 kilometres, there is almost always a break somewhere that is sheltered from the wind and lined up with the swell.
The three regions
The north: the Playgrounds
The northern zone, often called the Playgrounds, is a cluster of fun, high-quality waves close together, which makes it a favourite for charters and for mixed-ability groups. There is a bit of everything here, from playful walls to serious barrels, all within a tight radius.
The centre: Sipora
Central Mentawai, around the island of Sipora, holds some of the most famous names in the region and is where our Sunset Surf Villas are based. From the villa's own doorstep you can reach Tikus, Telescopes, Icelands, Suicides, Scarecrows and more, a spread of nine named breaks that runs from mellow to expert.
The south: the Pagais
The southern Pagai islands are home to long, mechanical waves that reward good surfers with some of the longest rides in the region. It is a little more remote, which is exactly why a live-aboard charter is the natural way to reach it.
Waves by skill level
One of the best things about the Mentawais is that world-class waves come in every flavour, so your ability shapes which breaks you should aim for.
- Beginner to improver: Softer, forgiving walls and channels where you can build confidence. A camp with a private boat lets you pick the gentle option each day.
- Confident intermediate: The sweet spot for the Mentawais. Plenty of rippable walls and makeable barrels, especially in the shoulder season when the swell is a touch smaller.
- Advanced and expert: The heavy, shallow reef barrels the region is famous for. On a bigger swell, these are as good as waves get anywhere on the planet.
A good surf guide is the difference between a great trip and a frustrating one. On every WaveBorn trip, our guides read the swell, wind and tide and put you on the break that matches your surfing that day, rather than the one that happens to be closest.
Beyond the Mentawais: Krui, South Sumatra
The wider region has more to offer than the Mentawais alone. On the mainland Sumatran coast at Krui, our Jenny's Bamboo Surfcamp sits among a dozen named breaks, from the long walls of Mandiri Beach to the serious slab at Way Jambu. It is a superb, less-crowded alternative or add-on to an island trip, and the surf season there stretches almost all year.
How to surf as many as possible
If your goal is to sample the widest spread of Mentawai waves in one trip, nothing beats a live-aboard charter. Because the boat moves with the swell, you are never stuck at one reef waiting for it to turn on, you simply sail to the one that already has. The Ombak Kabau and Mahalo both roam the archipelago, and Mahalo also runs the quieter Tello Islands to the north.
Prefer to root down and get to know a handful of breaks intimately? A surf camp with a private boat gives you the same access to a cluster of world-class waves without ever packing a bag. Either way, tell us your level and your dream waves and we will build the trip around them.
